Entrepreneurship gets romanticized.
We’re constantly told to quit the job, follow our passion, become our own boss, and build the life we’ve always dreamed about.
But here’s what I’ve learned from years of working with entrepreneurs and building businesses of my own:
Not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur, and that’s okay.
The question isn’t whether you want to own a business.
It’s whether you’re prepared for what ownership actually requires.
I’ve started and worked with businesses across different industries, from launching fashion weeks to building my own consulting company and supporting entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and startups. I’ve seen businesses grow from an idea into millions in annual revenue.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
It starts with your mindset.
If autonomy and freedom are core values for you, working within someone else’s rules may eventually become frustrating. But don’t confuse entrepreneurship with having no boss.
Your customers are your bosses.
Your mindset has to be prepared for that reality.
Sometimes the signs are also coming from the market.
You may apply for job after job and receive no interviews, no offers, and little feedback. That doesn’t automatically mean you’re supposed to start a business, but it may be worth asking whether the traditional employment market is telling you to consider another path.
And please don’t believe you’re too old.
Some of the most successful entrepreneurs begin after 40. Experience can be an advantage because you’ve developed knowledge, resilience, and a better understanding of how business actually works.
But here’s the part I really want you to hear:
Don’t quit your job simply because you’re excited about an idea.
Do your research.
Talk to potential customers.
Test the market.
And if possible, let your current job help fund the dream you’re building.
You don’t necessarily have to build a company from scratch either.
Buying an existing business, purchasing a franchise, or taking over a profitable “mom-and-pop” operation can create a path into entrepreneurship with a foundation already in place.
Entrepreneurship doesn’t have one look.
It doesn’t have one age.
And it certainly doesn’t have one path.
But every path begins in the same place:
Your mind.
Take care of it. Prepare it. Strengthen it.
Because you can only go as far as your mind allows you to go.
