There are some moments as a parent that you instinctively want to capture.
The picture.
The video.
The perfect post.
But sometimes, the most meaningful moments are the ones you never record.
This week, my youngest daughter started kindergarten.
My older daughter entered middle school, and watching both of them step into new chapters of their education reminded me just how quickly our children grow.
But my youngest gave me a moment I’ll never forget.
On the drive to school, I played affirmations. From the backseat, I heard her repeating them:
“I am smart.”
“I am loved.”
She arrived at school wearing her backpack and glasses, full of excitement. She was practically skipping out of the car. I could barely get a hug and kiss because she was ready to experience the next chapter of her life.
And I didn’t record it.
She moved too quickly.
But I realized something:
I didn’t need to.
I wanted that moment to live somewhere deeper than my camera roll.
I wanted it to sit in my spirit.
Because I already know I’ll tell her about it years from now.
When she’s 15.
Maybe even 75.
I’ll tell her about the little girl who couldn’t wait to walk into kindergarten.
That moment also reminded me of something profound about parenting.
We become our children’s windshield wipers.
Our children are going to encounter rain, dirt, debris, disappointment, and uncertainty. We can’t remove all of those things from their lives.
But we can help clear their lens.
We can teach them that they are loved.
That they are capable.
That they are smart.
That they have something valuable to contribute to the world.
And then, eventually, we have to let them see for themselves.
Our job isn’t to create their vision for them.
It’s to help them develop the clarity and confidence to create their own.
That’s what I want for my children.
Not a life without obstacles.
A life where they have the confidence to navigate them.
Not a world where everything goes their way.
A world they can approach with curiosity, gratitude, courage, and joy.
And maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our children:
a clear enough lens to see the beauty in the world and the confidence to create a world of their own. 💙
