The Secret to Peaceful Blended Family Gatherings

🌟 3 Tips for Planning a Successful Blended Family Gathering—Even During Difficult Times 🌟

Recently, my family and I said goodbye to our grandmother, our 83-year-old matriarch who left behind nearly 90 great-grandchildren, 35 grandchildren, and 8 children. 👵🏽💛

She was our foundation, and planning her homegoing with my mom, aunts, uncles, and cousins reminded me of what it truly takes to keep a blended family united.

Here are 3 tips that helped us create a peaceful, loving celebration—and can help you too for the holidays [WATCH FULL VIDEO]:

1️⃣ Lead with Empathy
Everyone has their own story, their own truth, and their own way of expressing their joy and/or grief. 💔 Give people grace and space to show up as their authentic selves.

2️⃣ Communicate Clearly
Big, blended families need structure. 📱 Use tools like Facebook groups, Messenger, GroupMe, email, or text threads to keep everyone informed so nothing becomes a surprise on the big day.

3️⃣ Be Inclusive
Invite everyone to participate in decisions—big or small. 🤝 Whether it’s planning the ceremony or choosing the funeral attire of a loved one who has passed, making space for everyone reduces tension and builds unity. And if someone can’t attend, don’t take it personally—circle back to empathy.

These three principles helped us honor my grandmother beautifully, and I hope they help your family stay connected through challenging times and beyond the holiday season. ❤️

Be free to be who you are—and do all you can to keep your blended family close.
